Case study Circular Economy: FREITAG – Sustainable bags and accessories made from recycled materials
Initial situation:
At a time when the fashion industry is being criticized for its considerable ecological footprint, consumers are looking for sustainable alternatives. Many products, especially bags and accessories, are often made from unsustainable materials and contribute to environmental pollution.
Challenge:
There is a need to create sustainable fashion options that are both stylish and environmentally friendly. The challenge is to find materials that can be recycled and transform them into high-quality products that meet consumer needs.
Solution approach:
FREITAG, a company from Zurich, has accepted this challenge. In 1993, graphic designers Markus and Daniel Freitag were looking for a functional, water-repellent bag and came up with the idea of using recycled truck tarpaulins. Today, FREITAG produces a variety of bags and accessories from recycled materials, including PET fabrics, truck tarpaulins and other upcycled materials. The company has also introduced innovative concepts such as “S.W.A.P.” (Shopping Without Any Payment), a Tinder-like bag exchange for customers.
Inspiration for SMEs:
FREITAG is a shining example of how companies can have a positive impact on the Sustainable World through creative solutions and sustainable practices. This example shows that it is possible to successfully combine fashion, functionality and sustainability.
