Post: Delegation: Employee error = responsibility of the boss

Alexander Groth, author and speaker on the subject of leadership, explains:

A manager had the following experience as a very young employee. He made a serious mistake at a bank. He caused the bank to lose over 100,000 Deutschmarks with an incorrect transfer. His boss at the time was on a business trip and he returned two days later. All the employees expected him to make a big fuss. Instead, he took the apprentice into the elevator. There he pressed the top button that led to the board. The young man was very nervous, knowing that redundancies would be announced up there. At the top, they went into the office of a board member who was known to be choleric. As expected, the board was screaming with rage. The boss at the time just said calmly. “Yes, you’re right, this happened in my department. I take full responsibility.” A few minutes later, when they were both outside again, the boss said to the apprentice: “I never want to experience anything like that again. Do you understand me?” The boss never spoke about it again. In return, the young man gave his absolute loyalty to the boss because he had covered for him. Mistakes made by employees are mistakes made by the boss. Taking responsibility creates respect. Respect is not only gained at the bottom but also at the top. Standing up for mistakes – that has a different effect than excuses. It creates inner freedom and inner strength.
