UNSDG Goal 05: Gender equality

In everyday life, we often unconsciously contribute to gender equality by offering children equal educational opportunities regardless of gender and ensuring a fair division of labor in the household. It is also important to work towards gender equality in adult life, for example by promoting equal career opportunities and questioning traditional role models in the social environment.

The fifth goal of the United Nations, “gender equality”, aims to end all forms of discrimination against women and girls worldwide. It is not only about equal rights in the world of work, but also about all forms of access to education, participation in political processes and protection from violence. Through empowerment, women and girls are to be promoted more sustainably so that they can live in an inclusive and just world.

In order to contribute to gender equality, organizations from different sectors can achieve great effects with relatively little effort:

  • Libraries: Book clubs can organize regular reading sessions in local libraries that tell stories about strong personalities of both genders. In this way, young people can learn about equality and diversity at an early age.
  • Craft businesses: Organization of taster days specifically for girls in areas such as electrics, carpentry or plumbing to encourage young women to take up professions in which they have been underrepresented up to now.
  • Sports clubs: Sports clubs can hire more female coaches and referees to inspire young girls. They can also offer workshops on topics such as equality and respect in sport for all members.
