What are supporting processes?

The strategy is implemented in the company via processes. Processes are all those procedures that take place in the company on a daily and recurring basis. Processes are usually divided into value-adding processes (e.g. baking bread rolls) and supporting processes (e.g. handling finances). Value-adding processes are so called because they generate value for stakeholders (e.g. baking bread rolls for customers).

Supporting processes are so called because they support the value-adding processes. The main task of these processes is to further increase the value for stakeholders with as little effort as possible. Supporting processes tend to be standardized (e.g. accounting).

Sometimes the supporting processes are literally critical to success. If, for example, we are unable to look after children or pets well on a day-to-day basis when we are away (“family process”), we may not be able to work in the office at all. Or if occupational safety is not guaranteed in the factory, the work may not be carried out by law.

On the other hand, it is also easy for the supporting processes to get out of hand, leading to inefficiencies and high indirect costs that make value creation unnecessarily expensive. To ensure that the supporting processes also improve value creation, they should be both effective and efficient. Process indicators and analyses help to determine this.

Let’s finish with an example:

Let’s imagine a visit to a great bakery. Behind behind all the magic is a series of supporting processes that work like the invisible strings of a puppet show to ensure a harmonious and successful business:

  • Let’s start with cleansing, a process that is often overlooked but is of crucial importance. In our bakery, cleaning ensures that every surface shines and every corner is hygienic, creating a welcoming atmosphere for customers and a safe working environment for employees.
  • Next, we look at building management. It takes care of everything from the maintenance of the ovens to the design of the sales floor and ensures that the physical environment functions optimally.
  • The deployment of personnel is another critical supporting process. In our bakery, he ensures that employees are trained, motivated and available on the right days and at the right times.
  • Finally, we come to the strategy process. This supportive process helps the bakery to define suitable goals, use resources wisely and shape the future sustainably.
